Opensignal is the independent global standard for analyzing consumer mobile experience. Our industry reports are the definitive guide to tát understanding the true experience consumers receive on wireless networks.

Market Overview

In our latest assessment of the mobile network experience in Vietnam, we see a two-horse race between Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone. Viettel Mobile wins four out of ten awards outright — Games Experience, Voice Experience, 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience — and shares the top spot in Video Experience, where it statistically tied with Vinaphone. But Vinaphone reigns in the Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience and Excellent Consistent Quality categories. Vinaphone also jointly wins the awards for Availability and Chip Core Consistent Quality alongside MobiFone.

Opensignal found the mobile network experience reported by our users in Vietnam is characterized by large extremes. While Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone stood out among their competitors, Vietnamobile fell flat with scores averaging far below the competition in most of our award categories.

Earlier this year, Vietnam announced plans to tát issue licenses for commercial 5G services in 2022, starting with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, then later expanding to tát several urban areas and high-tech industrial zones. Currently, Vietnam's three national operators — MobiFone, Vinaphone and Viettel Mobile — have piloted 5G in 16 cities and provinces.

While these three operators have agreed to tát share network infrastructure and deployment costs for future rollouts, MobiFone proposed only sharing 5G infrastructure among carriers in remote areas with low demand to tát facilitate cost-saving. As the operators are looking to tát commercialize 5G over the coming years, 4G and 3G continue to tát play a vital role because these are mature mobile technologies to tát which consumers spend most time connected.

In this report, we've analyzed data gathered in the 90 days (from December 1, 2021, to tát February 28, 2022) to tát compare the mobile network experience of Vietnam's four national operators: MobiFone, Vietnamobile, Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone.

Opensignal’s Video Experience quantifies the quality of Clip streamed to tát mobile devices by measuring real-world Clip streams over an operator's networks. The metric is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, built upon detailed studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters, including picture quality, Clip loading time and stall rate, with the perceived Clip experience as reported by real people. To calculate Clip experience, we are directly measuring Clip streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to tát quantify the overall Clip experience for each operator on a scale from 0 to tát 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions — including Full HD (FHD) and 4K / Ultra HD (UHD) — and are streamed directly from the world’s largest Clip nội dung providers.

In addition to tát Video Experience, we report on the following metrics related to tát Clip experience:

  • 5G Video Experience: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users when they were connected to tát an operator’s 5G network.
  • Video Experience – 5G Users: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users with a 5G device and a 5G subscription across an operator's networks. It factors in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G Clip experience along with the availability of each technology.

Our availability metrics are not a measure of a network’s geographical extent. They won’t tell you whether you are likely to tát get a signal if you plan to tát visit a remote rural or nearly uninhabited region. Instead, they measure what proportion of time people have a network connection, in the places they most commonly frequent — something often missed by traditional coverage metrics. Looking at when users have a connection rather phàn nàn where, provides us with a more precise reflection of the true user experience.

We also keep track of the instances that leave mobile users most frustrated: when there is no signal to tát connect to tát at all. The most common dead zones users struggle with occur indoors. As most of our availability data is collected indoors (as that’s where users spend most of their time), we’re particularly astute at detecting areas of zero signal.

Our availability metrics take a user-centric, time-based approach that complements the user-centric and geographical-based methodology used by our reach metrics.
